Those of us who are interested in securing future investment in faster broadband may wish to register their interest on the East of England Development Agency website at http://erebusonline.org.uk/index.html

we get 0.5M to 0.8M depending on which way the wind blows ;-)

Did anyone see the story today about Rutland Telecom?

http://www.rutlandtelecom.co.uk/
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8618507.stm

http://www.relay-rutlandtelecom.co.uk/F ... ional.html
"Can Rutland Telecom help communities suffereing from poor broadband speeds? "

They're available to help other rural communities do the same.

How many households are there in Bassingbourn? Who'd be up for £100 to invest in FTTC at £30/month?

Harry

Yes I saw this news item. Slow broadband is hurting some of our local businesses. BT Openreach are not planning any fast broadband in Bassingbourn in the foreseeable future. We need a critical mass of people here who are willing to push something forward - some people have contacted local TV but it hasn't got the coverage yet.

I am with Talk talk and get 2.3MB download and 0.4MB upload. but I find that this varies. Have been on the site http://top10.com/broadband/speedtest/ and found that we had one of the highest speeds locally, I live by the Hoops.
BT speeds when I checked 0.3MB to 1.3MB download and 0.4MB upload.

I'm fine using my internet speed to 1.5Mb. But I'm still wishing if they are going to improve their service provider connection. Because having low connection to me affects my home job.

We live just about the furthest away from the Royston Exchange that you can possibly be (we are actually closer to the Arrington exchange than Royston!) , so BT broadband for us was a pipe dream.. Yet they keep rubbing it in all the time by sending us promotional junk mail asking us to sign up for Broadband ! We have solved the problem with mobile broadband from T mobile , but it costs us £20 a month. We get 1.8 Mb max , but it is weather dependant. It really depresses me that BT can just ignore our village. We are 12 miles away from Cambridge, a world renowned centre of science and technology, yet the service we get is appalling ! Have also contacted Andrew Lansley and got letters from BT. They offered to do a site survey to look at connecting us to Arrington, but said it would cost tens of thousands of pounds- which we would have to pay !!
Is it worth calling a public meeting to try and reach 'critical mass' ? We did well to get support over the traveller site ?

I dont often listen to the radio but happened to be moving my wifes car last Friday evening and heard a report on Radio 1 at about 6pm last Friday it was a reported in "Bassingbourn" reporting on poor broadband speeds...

He happened to interview a teenager who mentioned the slow speeds with accessing facebook and the like, not perhaps the most important use of internet but I think we all deserve a usable speed... I personally get 3meg down and 600kbps up so feel quite lucky, I am with sky who's service is provided directly on this kit (LLU) so not sure if others experience similar decent speeds with no BT, LLU'd providers? I am at the furthest end of Kneesworth so I do understand many of you are some miles into the village.

In my job I am unluckly enough to have to deal with BT and know how much a pain they can be when dealing with anything which goes against their normal paths... I hope we can get this resolved, perhaps I will look into options to see if we can get some publicity for us...

If anyone had any ideas please feel free to share?

No- too far away from the exchange ! Why a village the size of ours doesn't have it's own exchange beats me! If fibre came to the Pear Tree we would get broadband. That is why it would be great if we used people power to campaign and get publicity for our plight !
